Comprehension

Comprehension

Definition

Comprehension refers to the ability to understand or grasp the meaning of something. It involves not just reading or hearing information but also processing and interpreting it to make sense of it. In education, comprehension is crucial as it shows how well someone understands what they read or hear. It goes beyond just recognizing words to understanding the deeper meaning, context, and implications of the information presented.

There are different levels of comprehension, ranging from literal comprehension (understanding the basic facts) to inferential comprehension (drawing conclusions based on the text) and evaluative comprehension (forming opinions and judgments based on the information). Improving comprehension skills involves strategies like active reading, asking questions, making connections to prior knowledge, summarizing information, and visualizing concepts. These techniques help enhance understanding and retention of the material.
