Definition

Scrape as a verb, means to drag or pull something across a surface with force, often resulting in removing a thin layer of material. Scraping can be done with various tools like a spatula, knife, or even fingernails, depending on the context. For example, you might scrape off old paint from a wall before repainting it, or scrape the ice off your car windshield on a frosty morning.

In cooking, scraping the bottom of a pan while cooking can help to release flavorful browned bits that add depth to sauces and gravies. This process is known as deglazing. Moreover, when a person gets injured and their skin is rubbed or abraded against a rough surface, we refer to that as a scrape. These minor injuries often result in superficial wounds that may bleed but generally heal without much intervention. In a figurative sense, scrape can also mean barely managing to achieve something or getting through a difficult situation with difficulty. For instance, someone might scrape by on a test if they just pass with the minimum score.
